I wanted to highlight Shelagh’s work as I was struck by the quality and realism in her drawings. As the holidays are almost upon us I thought this would be a great way to capture forever a special animal that contributes to making your Smallholding a special place.
Here are a few words from the artist describing her background and work – Happy Holidays!
I am a published children’s book illustrator but after spending time at my sister’s farm www.roundhurstfarm.com I returned to my love of drawing with charcoal. Suddenly there was a growing interest in my work and a demand for original pieces, prints and commissions!
When possible I like to study the animal…each being a different character and then return to my studio to create big and bold charcoal drawings. If I can’t get to meet the animal in question for a commission a few good photographs seems to do the trick!
The collection is taking me the length and breath of the country from the Scottish highlands to the south coast, travelling far and wide in the search of rare breeds and interesting farm animals. I’m hoping to create a large drawing of a whole bull standing strong and proud and stag with it’s stunning antlers and of course lots more farm animals and Highland Cattle!
